Google Data Studio: A Simple Guide

June 7, 2021

Insights into your brands marketing efforts are an essential aspect of the job for any marketing practitioner.

Any marketing practitioner knows that collating insights into marketing efforts, is an essential aspect of the job. Google Data Studio is simplifying the process with a wide variety of ready-made templates and includes a customisable option to suit your brand's needs. It links to Google Analytics and delivers visual insights that are more useful than a lengthy report or statistics list.

So, how to get started?

1. Explore, Explore, Explore

Sign-in and start looking through the templates. Once you've found the one you like, you can make a copy and link it to your analytics for a simple dashboard option.

2. Determine your Business Questions

Take a moment to reflect on your business's questions. Is it what products are selling? How many views you're getting? Once you've decided what matters most to your marketing efforts customise your templates to the data you want to see by choosing 'Blank Report'.

3. Link to your brand's data

There are 17 options to import data, ranging from linking a Google Ads account to uploading a CSV (comma-separated values) file. You'll see a table in your report if it's working, and from this, you can begin to add charts.

The Add a Chart has lots of visuals to make navigating the process easy, and any chart can be customised further using the Data and Style tabs (on the right side of the screen). Make the report your own with conditional formatting – fonts and colours.

4. Create a One-Click Dashboard

This is the simplest way to create a dashboard and is accessed through Google Analytics. Simply click Customisation > Custom Reports, click on the insight overview you want (Audiences, Acquisitions or Behaviours) and Google Data Studio will automatically open with data from your Google Analytics account.
